Roger Hodgman

Roger has been Artistic Director of the Vancouver Playhouse , Dean of the School of Drama at the Victorian College of the Arts. and (for twelve years) Artistic Director of Melbourne Theatre Company directing over fifty productions for it. He now has a busy freelance career directing plays, operas, musicals and numerous TV dramas throughout Australia and in Canada, New Zealand and Japan.

THEATRE: Over 125 productions for Melbourne Theatre Company, Vancouver Playhouse, Shaw Festival (Canada), Sydney Theatre Company, Queensland Theatre Company, Black Swan Theatre Company, State Theatre Company of South Australia and other companies. 

MUSICALS: Productions include Sweeney Todd, (Sydney Critics Award for Best Musical), Assassins, A Little Night Music, Into The Woods, Follies, Wonderful Town, She Loves Me (both for The Shaw Festival, Canada), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Fiddler on the Roof and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (Sydney Critics Award for Best Musical) Assassins (Black Swan Theatre Company; fourteen productions for The Production Company including Follies, Little Me), Grey Gardens  Curtains,  A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder and Ragtime. He will direct the Australian premiere of The Who’s Tommy in August 

OPERA: Opera Australia: Rigoletto, Lakme, Don Pasquale. Queensland Opera: Rigoletto, La Cenerentola. Victorian Opera: Xerxes, Baroque Triple Bill, Nixon in China (Green Room Award for Best Production), Flying Dutchman., Banquet of Secrets,  Parsifal. New Zealand Opera: Xerxes. 

TV: Numerous dramas including Wentworth, Lockie Leonard, The Secret Life of Us ,Stepfather of the Bride, City Homicide, A Place to Call Home (originating  director), Packed to the Rafters

AWARDS: Helpmann Award for Best Director for Grey Gardens. Green Room Awards for Best Director for Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,  A Little Night Music and Flying Dutchman. Silver Bear for Best Telemovie at Chicago Film festival for Stepfather of the Bride.  Numerous nominations for Green Room, Helpmann, Sydney Theatre and AFI Awards.
