Calling all writers, composers and creators of new Australian Musical Theatre

We are thrilled to announce that applications are now open for an exciting residency opportunity to run alongside the festival in 2020. If you are currently developing a new Australian musical, this residency is for you! The residency is designed to give you the opportunity to develop your work, be mentored by leaders in the industry, expand your contacts for the future and showcase your work in front of a national audience.

About the residency

The Australian Musical Theatre Residency is a week-long residency for the purpose of developing and supporting new Australian musical theatre. The 2020 residency week runs from Monday 18th - Sunday 24th May in Launceston, Tasmania.

You can apply at any development stage of your work, and for any purpose that will bring your work closer to being performed.


Here are some examples of what you could do:

  • On the floor workshopping and development of a script or score

  • Working with a dramaturg to develop the story and concept

  • Composing new songs, or workshopping existing songs

  • Writing or workshopping scripts and dialogue

  • Recording songs for a concept album

  • Working on the design (set, costume, lighting, sound etc)

Who can apply?

Australian residents over the age of 18 who are engaged in writing or creating a musical theatre work can apply. The residency is open to people creating their first work, as well as established writers and artists

What's included?
  • Flights to Launceston from your nearest capital city.

  • Accommodation in Launceston for the residency week

  • A studio or space to suit your needs

  • Equipment to suit your needs (ie piano, sound system, etc)

  • Your work will be featured in the Australian Musical Theatre Festival Gala Concert

  • You will be given the opportunity to present a public showing of the work in development as part of the Festival, to gain exposure and audience feedback

  • We will connect you with mentors in areas where you need development or support.

  • We will also remain in contact with you after the residency to support you where we can in taking your work to the next stage

What do i need to provide?

You will need to source anything required for the residency beyond what is outlined above. This includes other artists or performers that you want to work with throughout your process. We can assist you with contacting local talent if this is your preference, or can assist with applying for funding to bring other artists to Launceston to support you.

Application Process
  • Click the "Apply Now" button below to complete the online Expression of Interest form. You will be asked for information about yourself, your work, your prior experience with musical theatre and what you want to achieve through the residency

  • Applications will be assessed by an Australian Musical Theatre Festival panel against three selection criteria:

    • Strong and clearly articulated concept

    • Strong planning and articulated goals

    • Clear outline of how the intended outcomes of the residency will be achieved

  • The successful applicant will be notified in mid-February
