In Musical Theatre, versatility is everything. Musicals have evolved over time from being classical based to pop based and performers need to be able to sing – and act- it all. At the festival, we believe there’s room for everything and as such we are thrilled to introduce an innovative new workshop in Acting through Style into this masterclass.
Shows such as ‘Hamilton’, ‘Six’ and ‘Moulin Rouge’ all require singing with traits derived from pop styles such as R&B, Country, Rap, Soul, Jazz and more but how do you continue to tell the story, while maintaining stylistic accuracy? What are the style tags that identify each of the above genres and how can you learn to lean into them to ensure you are the most versatile performer you can be? This session is co-taught by one of Australia’s leading contemporary Musical Theatre performers, Elenoa Rokobaro and acclaimed acting teacher, Tyran Parke. For the first part of the class, Tyran will work with Elenoa to illustrate a range of styles from their origins before both explore the relationship to contemporary musical theatre, as performed by a small selection of performers (others able to audit).
