Diversity and Inclusion Panel

As the world continues to change, so too must Musical Theatre. If we, as theatre makers, want our audiences to grow and stay connected, our art form must speak to a changing society.

In the wake of the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement, the world has been forced to investigate some uncomfortable truths about inherited levels of privilege and how we all can be the agents of change in an art form built on levels of unconscious bias and racism. The issues of our BIPOC community cannot fully be understood from outside but it is the responsibility of us all to create a theatre that is diverse and inclusive to all.

This diversity and Inclusion panel is one small way to understand and engage in that conversation. Since 2021, the Australian Musical Theatre Festival’s, Diversity & Inclusion Panel has been presented within a safe, educational and understanding space, allowing all to illuminate and interrogate some basic truths about the nature of Diversity and Inclusion in the arts.

In 2023, we continue the conversation in the same manner, including issues of neurodiversity in a bid to better understand how we might contribute to a brighter future for all.
